Just had a look over the TIS cd, and there is a lot of work involved.

 

Locking the engine. removing engine mounts, draining oil, removing accessories, expensive tools.

 

I cant see how many miles a chain lasts, but the garage wouldnt know how longs its been in there anyway. So i suppose they are going by ear on how noisy it is.

They are pulling your leg along with the dangly bits attached to them! :huh:

 

There is no belt to change, the camchain is a duplex (twin) chain designed for the lifetime of the car. Only consider changing if you start to hear ominous rattling noises which indicates tensioner failure or super streched chain (rare)

Wifeys 2.3 Ultima has now got 170,000 on the clock without even a hint of chain rattle. If you want to have a laugh ask them to do it and when you take the car in say you want to see the new parts they're going to fit and then add that you'll stay and watch the work.

Chriso,just incase you don't have access to a workshop manual or disc,give this site a look at www.fordscorpio.co.uk/engmanual and i'm sure you will find what you want.Engines are one and the same unit,near as makes no difference.
